Director of Science & Technology

Job Summary/ Purpose

The Director of Science & Technology is a key member of the Orbia Ventures team, ensuring that both strategic choices on investment focus areas, as well as deal-specific decision making is supported by solid science-based assessment and argumentation.

Main Responsibilities

• Research - Develop investment theses and points of view on technology trends relevant to Orbia Ventures
• Ecosystem building - Develop and maintain a network with like-minded VCs / CVCs and represent Orbia to generate high-quality deal flow.
• Sourcing - Identify and screen potential investment opportunities.
• Due diligence - Conduct technical due diligence, leveraging experts within Orbia and externally, create investment memos and present opportunities to Orbia Ventures’ investment committee.

Knowledge/ Experience Required and Minimum Qualifications

• Academic Level: PhD in natural science or engineering
• Minimum 10 years of work experience in innovation, VC, corporate fund, corporate development, or startup

Ability to demonstrate:

• Critical thinking, going deep on first principles and interact with experts from a wide range of scientific domains.
• Synthesizing complexity into clear arguments
• Evaluation of techno-economic analyses
• Strong thesis development and articulation
• Intellectual curiosity about venture capital, corporate innovation, and startups
• Proactive mindset: constantly seeking new approaches/improvements to processes and methods.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (other language a plus)
• Strong networking skills with entrepreneurs, investors, corporate executives, etc.
• Exemplary follow-through with minimal supervision
• A humble team player
