JOB TITLE: Lead Operator
DEPARTMENT: Production
REPORTS TO: Production Supervisor
LOCATION: St. Albert, AB, CAN
SHIFT: Night shift - Currently 12-hour day shift & night shift with a 4 on, 3 off one week; and 4 off, 3 on the next week. The rotation is per 2 weeks (Week 1 is Mon/Tues/Fri/Sat and Week 2 is Sun/Wed/Thur). Seasonal requirements may change this schedule based on operational/production capacity.
HOURS OF WORK: 12 hours a day (rotation), 6:45pm to 7:00am.
PAY: Starting pay is depending on experience and education.
Travel Requirements: Possible travel. Up to 5% for training purposes in the United States as well as Canada. Candidates are required to be able to travel internationally, and hold a valid passport.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
Maintain/develop optimal extrusion process parameters, tooling management, production trials, and training documents/videos/troubleshooting guides, testing for meeting safety, quality and production goals. Monitor and operate production line controls, color/product change-overs, troubleshooting, equipment adjustments and maintaining documentation, and Tier 1 meetings to meet OEE goals for production.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Production Supervisor in providing supervision, direction, and hands-on involvement to staff
- Assist Production Supervisor in monitoring HDPE production processes, equipment, and personnel to ensure maximum efficiency and quality.
- Assist in communicating standards for process time, settings, and other specifications for optimum output and quality conditions
- Provide tracking and feedback on results to staff and Production Supervisor
- Assist in performing ongoing checks of equipment, materials, and product. Recommends or takes action as required.
- Complete production work as needed, including running a production line
- Assist production staff with troubleshooting and resolving processing problems
- Train operators on equipment usage, procedures, and adjustments
- Follow and enforce safety and other company policies and procedures
- Assist with selection of auxiliary equipment used in production
- Perform work on special projects as needed
- requirements per training matrix. Assists with extrusion line start-ups and changeovers, monitors and troubleshoots extrusion processes, maintain the required documentation and records.
- Make decisions regarding equipment adjustments needed to maintain product quality and production efficiencies.
EDUCATIONAL AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Reading, writing, and mathematical competency testing required
- At least 3-5 years of experience in plastic extrusion manufacturing and other related products and processes.
- Proficient skills with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
- High mechanical aptitude: the ability to learn about machinery, equipment, and apply such knowledge appropriately.
- Firm understanding of instrumentation: the use of measuring instruments for observation, monitoring, or control.
- Experience with operations monitoring: watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure machinery is working to full capacity and efficiency.
- Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to verbally communicate, read and write in the English language.
- Experience in working with ERP and MRP systems (SAP).
OCCUPATIONAL AND/OR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds with or without assistance
- Able to bend, stoop, kneel, twist at wait and climb.
- Able to hear equipment, view and discern defective product, and sense temperature changes in the finished product
- Ability to move from one area of plant to another
- Good mechanical skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others
- Must have good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and multitask
- Computer proficiency
- Prior systems and continuous improvement orientation
- Able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. This can be a light or highly mobile position depending on the needs in the plant.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Manufacturing floor environment with hot extrusion process equipment
- May include outside conditions on top of railcars or silos in all types of weather
- Safety shoes and safety glasses required
