Summer Intern - Battery Materials Evaluation

Fluor & Energy Materials, an Orbia business, is searching for a Summer Intern – Battery Materials Evaluation to be based at our site in Madison, Wisconsin 

 

Main Purpose:

  • Physical and electrochemical characterization of battery materials
  • General laboratory support and maintenance.
  • Summarize results in technical reports

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Solution and slurry blending using bench scale techniques.
  • Work with process engineers to support slurry development for electrode coating process
    • Characterization of physical parameters of slurries including rheology and uniformity of slurries prepared (ie viscosity, shear thinning, gelling
    • Characterization of specific components (ie coating of graphite particles)
    • Characterization of coatings prepared (ie uniformity, binder distribution)
    • Characterization of finished electrodes (ie, porosity, density, adhesion, bend radius)
  • Maintain documentation of lab work including weights, process, times, observations, etc.
  • Clean, dry, and maintain work areas, tools, containers, and other required equipment.
  • Participate in R&D coordination meetings.  Discuss results with technical team.
  • Maintain working knowledge of relevant processes included in cross-functional training
    • Material preparation
    • Cell build and testing
    • General lab support and maintenance
  • Conduct additional laboratory tasks as needed to support internal and customer development projects

 

Education:

  • High School diploma, preferred some college level classes in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related discipline

 

Experience & Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of safety practices for working in a chemical laboratory.
  • Knowledge of characterization techniques (e.g., conductivity, viscosity, KF) and equipment troubleshooting for instruments used in techniques listed above.
  • Experience in basic lab processes and techniques
  • Preferred some experience with analytical instruments
  • MS Word, MS Excel
