Lab Technician - Intern

The Lab Technician supports the Madison Technology Center operations with a core mission of supporting energy materials development activities, including development of Li-ion battery electrolytes, anode, and cathode materials, under the direction of the Lead Engineer.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Support internal and customer development projects with material preparation, cell build and testing, and general laboratory support and maintenance.

  • Material preparation (e.g., punching/drying electrodes)
  • Cell build and testing (e.g., cell assembly and disassembly, start/stop testing)
  • Cell property characterization (e.g., cell impedance and Archimedes analysis)
  • General lab support and maintenance
  • Participate in facility planning and coordination meetings.
  • Support development and review of SOP/THA documentation

 

2. Support electrolyte blending operations and physical characterization at R&D facility.

  • Execute electrolyte blending in an isolator glove box using bench scale techniques.
  • Maintain documentation of electrolyte blending, including specific lot and quantities of components used in each blend.
  • Clean, dry, and maintain electrolyte blending glassware and other required equipment.
  • Conduct physical characterization analysis and record results.
  • Support technical projects to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory procedures related to R&D electrolyte processes.
  • Work closely with operations or R&D teams to understand process requirements to support problem-solving and/or improvement activities.

 

COMPLEXITY OF THE JOB

  • The role is responsible for executing small-scale blending operations and cell builds within an isolation chamber with closed transfers required to maintain integrity of the product.
  • This position’s tasks may be executed in a hazardous chemical environment where attention to detail is imperative for worker safety.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LANGUAGE, & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Academic Level: 
  • H.S. diploma or A.S. degree in a scientific field.

  

  • Language(s) and level of proficiency: 
  • English (fluent)

 

  •  Knowledge/Experience:
    • Knowledge of safety practices for working in a chemical laboratory.
    • High level of manual dexterity, visual acuity, and attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated computer and software skills required, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Communication skills.
    • Ability to follow established policies, procedures and protocols

 

  • Physical requirements:
    • Mobility: ability to stand, walk and sit for extended periods.  Must be able to move freely within the office and lab environments. Must be able to reach and grasp as appropriate to fulfill essential functions.
    • Vision: must have the visual acuity to read detailed documents (including SOP/THAs), computer screens, and other written communication. Corrective lenses are acceptable.
    • Hearing: ability to work in general office cubicle and open research lab environments that may include moderate to loud noise levels
    • Strength: ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
    • Manual Dexterity: ability to perform repetitive tasks with consistency while wearing lab personal protective equipment including  (e.g., safety glasses, lab coat, gloves). Must be able to work with small fragile components in a precise manner. Must be able to work within a glovebox for tasks that involve handling small components, pouring/mixing chemicals, and other tasks requiring attention to detail.
    • Communication: must be able to effectively communicate with team members and clients, including speaking and listening. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
