Instrument and Controls Engineer

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provide leadership and technical oversight over all aspects of instrumentation & controls scope for the assigned project to achieve project success. Must provide high level of expertise in all types of process instruments and process controls and provide active leadership and technical acumen working with EPC firms to deliver quality and timely instrument & controls deliverables. Must also ensure instrument and controls design and construction meets company standards and meets targets through the project lifecycle from FEL through startup and commissioning.

This role will spend significant time at selected EPC firm’s offices and lead work with main automation contractor as the project needs require. May require to temporary relocation to the project site during construction & commissioning phases.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide know-how at state-of-the-art levels in instrumentation and controls to support successful completion of the capital investment program consistent with project objectives and technical requirements during entire project lifecycle from FEL through startup and commissioning.
  • Support project manager for all instrument & controls related work including contract creation and execution with main automation contractor.
  • Oversee main automation contractor’s work and deliverables ensuring contract requirements are met. Ensure consistency across multiple project areas for process instrumentation & controls standards, practices, and configuration. Work as needed to address interfaces across project boundaries.
  • Advise the Engineering Manager, Construction Manager and Project Manager of deviations from company standards and specifications.
  • Ensure the technical quality, physical integrity and operational performance of instrument and controls  system design, installation and pre-commissioning activities for the assigned project.
  • Act as primary source of instrument & controls technical expertise available to project members and leadership. Provide feedback on related engineering, construction, and vendor performance.
  • Adopt, maintain and apply a set of company procedures for technical reviews, equipment selection, quality, safety, and operability checks and standards for engineering design to be incorporated into contractual requirements as Detailed Engineering specifications and drawings.
  • Provide expertise to ensure effective monitoring and appraisal (quality assurance of engineering/design, procurement/fabrication, and installation and pre-commissioning ) of contractor performance to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Ensure Requests for Information are addressed, within the instrument & controls discipline.
  • Maintain and communicate to the Engineering Manager and Project Manager, instrumentation and process controls technical requirements to allow the company to achieve consistent application of established standards and specifications.
  • Comply with applicable Laws, Regulations and Company engineering, construction and pre-commissioning procedures and standards.

 

Role Requirements

  • B.S. degree in either chemical engineering or electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 15 years of instrument and controls engineering experience in chemical or petrochem plant and/or with EPC engineering firms. At least 10 yrs working on large capital projects. Experience working at an operating plant is a plus including on DCS upgrade projects.
  • At least 5 years experience overseeing and working with a main automation contractor on large projects at an industrial plant.
  • Large project experience desired including working on projects with large modularized scope.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience creating and presenting to company leadership.
  • Global travel may be required.
